FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

  • At Katie Blue Salon, we value our clients’ time and our stylists’ livelihoods. Our stylists are paid on commission, which means they rely on their scheduled appointments for their income. When a client cancels, reschedules, or no-shows at the last minute, it’s difficult to fill that spot on short notice, and the stylist loses out on their expected pay.

To help protect our stylists' time and income, we require a deposit for certain appointments, particularly longer services like color. If you come to your appointment, your deposit will be applied to your total. However, if you cancel, reschedule within 48 hours, or don’t show up, the deposit acts as a small compensation fee for the stylist’s reserved time.

We appreciate your understanding and support in helping us create a fair and sustainable environment for our talented team!

  • Think of it as our “getting-to-know-your-hair” date! Every head of hair is unique, and we want to make sure we understand exactly what you want (and what your hair needs) before we dive in. The consultation lets us chat about your hair history, your goals, and how we’ll make it all happen—so when you come in for color, we’re all set to work our magic!

  • We book consultations and color appointments separately. Our stylists’ schedules are carefully planned to ensure every client gets the time and attention they deserve. Additionally, our stylists tend to book out a week or two in advance, so last-minute add-ons are often difficult to accommodate.

During your consultation, your stylist will work with you to design your dream look and schedule your color session with the perfect amount of time to bring it to life.

  • We’ve found that color appointments are best scheduled with a personal touch! Since every color service is unique, it’s easy to underestimate or overestimate the time needed. To ensure your stylist has the perfect amount of time to give you the results you want, we handle color bookings the old-fashioned way—by chatting with you directly. This way, we can consider all the important details and set you up for a flawless experience!

  • We absolutely accept walk-ins! However, just a heads up—our stylists are often booked out a week or two in advance. That said, we still encourage you to give it a try—every now and then, we’ve had some lucky walk-ins catch an opening!

  • Nope, no parking lot—but the good news is, there’s plenty of free street parking right in front of the salon!

  • Absolutely! We understand you’re busy and the salon is a place where you can just turn off and relax. Please let front desk know or leave a note in online booking while making an appointment that you prefer a silent appointment.

  • Absolutely! At Katie Blue Salon, all genders are welcome. We’re a judgment-free zone, and we’re here to help everyone feel confident and look their best!

  • Balayage is a French word for "sweeping," and it’s all about hand-painting highlights onto your hair for a super natural, sun-kissed look. Instead of uniform highlights, balayage gives you that effortlessly blended, “just spent a summer at the beach” vibe. Bonus: it grows out beautifully, so you don’t have to worry about harsh roots!

  • Balayage is a technique, not a specific look. It involves hand-painting color onto the hair in soft, sweeping motions to create a natural, sun-kissed effect. This technique gives a soft blend with your natural hair color and tends to grow out seamlessly, making it a great low-maintenance option.

Highlights, on the other hand, are created using foils to apply color closer to the roots in defined sections, resulting in a more uniform, higher-contrast look.

Sometimes, achieving the look in your inspiration photo may require a combination of balayage and foiling techniques. Your stylist will customize the approach to bring your vision to life while keeping your hair healthy and beautiful. Not sure which is right for you? Book a consultation, and we’ll help you create your dream look!

  • We believe curls should be treated with the respect they deserve! Our stylists usually start with a dry cut to shape your curls just right, then they’ll wash, style with curly-specific products, and finish with a diffuser to give you that perfect set. After it’s dry, they might do a few final snips to make sure every curl falls perfectly!

  • Determining your curl pattern starts with understanding the curl type system, which ranges from 1 (straight) to 4 (coily), with subcategories (A, B, C) based on the tightness of the curls. Here’s how to find yours:

    1. Start with Clean, Product-Free Hair:
Wash and condition your hair, then let it air-dry without adding any products. This shows your natural curl pattern without interference.

    2. Observe Your Hair’s Shape:

      • Type 2 (Wavy): Loose, S-shaped waves.

      • Type 3 (Curly): More defined curls with an S or corkscrew shape.

      • Type 4 (Coily): Tight, zig-zag curls or coils.

    3. Check the Curl Tightness:

      • A: Looser curls or waves.

      • B: Medium-tight curls or waves.

      • C: Tightest, most compact curls or coils.

    4. Consider Variations:
Many people have more than one curl pattern across their head, so you may be a mix of types.

If you're unsure or want help identifying and caring for your curls, book a free 15 minute consultation with one of our stylists! We’d love to help you embrace and enhance your natural texture. Want visual help? Check out this curl pattern here.
